b. Discuss the significance of biomedical waste management in healthcare settings. How can hospital leadership ensure compliance, safety, and sustainability in line with the Biomedical Waste Management Rules, 2016 (amended 2019)?
2. Read the following case study carefully. Answer in 500-700 words each. 10 marks
CityCare Super Specialty Hospital, a 300-bed tertiary care center located in a metropolitan city, is planning to upgrade its medical gas supply infrastructure. Currently, the hospital relies primarily on cylinder-based systems for supplying oxygen, nitrous oxide, medical air, and vacuum. Due to increasing demand, patient safety concerns, and recommendations from the Quality Assurance Committee, the hospital administration has decided to install a Centralized Medical Gas Pipeline System (MGPS) integrated with a Liquid Medical Oxygen (LMO) tank.
During the planning stage, the hospital management faces the following challenges:
• Determining the need assessment for current and future gas requirements, especially in ICUs, OTs, and HDUs.
• Deciding the appropriate location and safety design for the LMO tank and manifold room as per statutory norms.
• Ensuring redundancy in gas supply with proper zoning and backup systems.
• Evaluating the cost implications of centralized MGPS versus PSA oxygen plants in resourcelimited departments.
• Managing statutory requirements, including compliance with Indian Explosives Act and ISO 7396 standards.
